Located in the Bloomsbury area of London, the British Museum is dedicated to human history, art and culture and charges no admission fee.

Established in 1753, the British Museum is now home to almost 8 million works and documents the story of human culture from the beginning to the present.

The museum has ten curatorial and research departments, including: Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Ancient Egypt and Sudan, Asia, Britain, Europe and Prehistory, Coins and Medals, Conservation and scientific research, Greece and Rome, Middle East, Portable Antiquities and Treasure and Prints and Drawings.

Opening times

Admission is free and the British Museum is open daily from 10am-5.30pm.

The Museum is closed 24, 25, 26 December and 1 January, but is open every other day of the year.

Museum galleries are open daily from 10am-5.30pm and most are open until 8.30pm on Fridays. Closing starts from 5.20pm (8.20pm) on Fridays.

The Great Court, including the Information Desk, is open daily 9am to 6pm and until 8.30pm on Fridays.

The Great Russell Street entrance has 12 steps with a handrail. Self-operable lifts are situated on both sides of the steps. There is level access at the Montague Place entrance.

The majority of galleries and all special exhibitions are fully accessible. Free plans of the Museum are available in the Great Court, these show the location of lifts.

How to get to the British Museum

Situated in Great Russell Street, London, the nearest underground stations to the British Museum are: Tottenham Court Road (500m), Holborn (500m), Russell Square (800m) and Goodge Street (800m).
