Place de la Concorde

About Place de la Concorde

The largest public square in Paris, the Place de la Concorde is situated at one end of the city’s most famous thoroughfare, the Champs-Elysées. It is a space of great historical importance, having been the location of the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, amongst others. The Place has changed names a number of times - originally Place Louis XV, it was renamed Place de la Révolution after the uprising and was given its current name in 1830. The most notable feature in the square is its towering Luxor Obelisk, a 3,300 year old, 250-tonne gift from Egypt which has stood in the square since 1836. Transporting such a large structure from Egypt in the nineteenth century was a great logistical feat and is described in diagrams on the base of the monument. On either side of the Obelisk, you’ll find two typically French fountains, both fine examples of architecture during the time of Louis-Philippe.
