About Colchester Zoo 

Opened in 1963, Colchester Zoo is set in 60 acres of park just south of Colchester. Visitors to the zoo will experience a number of unique exhibits including a trip on the Lost Madagascar Train to meet the lemurs and a pair of endangered Sun Bears rescued from poachers in Cambodia. The Zoo also features a daily Discovery Centre, where visitors can get up close and personal with all types of creatures, as well as animal training sessions and exclusive experience packages such as Zoo Keeper Shadowing. Notably, Colchester Zoo is home to two critically endangered Amur Leopards, of which there are believed to be only 35 left in the wild.

The zoo is open from 9.30am every day throughout the year except on Christmas Day. Its closing time varies according to the season so please check the official website before visiting. Ticket prices at the gate are £22.49 per adult and £15.49 for children between 3 and 14 years old. However, you can benefit from discounts by booking online at least 24 hours’ in advance. You can reach Colchester Zoo by bus or train from Colchester main train station. Alternatively there is free parking for those travelling by car. The nearest airport is Stansted Airport, around 30 miles away. It’s recommended to arrive early at the zoo so that you can see as many of the exhibits as possible and it’s also advisable to book tickets early for visits during school and bank holidays.
